Coin-Op Cleveland: a 30 Day Classic Arcade with Profits Supporting Local Charities Serving Women and Children
CLEVELAND — APRIL, 2013 – Cleveland has earned quite a reputation when it comes to community support: it’s a city that champions the underdog and stands behind neighborhood charities. Two local men are relying on this camaraderie by asking city residents to crowd-fund their project, Coin-Op Cleveland, a temporary 1990’s retro-style arcade, in order to create a new community space and raise money for charity.
“We want this to be a place where people can just come in, have fun, hang out, and meet new friends,” said John Stanchina, one of the co-founders of this initiative and Ohio City resident. “And while this is happening, profits will be donated to charities that help the city grow.”
Inspired by places like Ground Kontrol in Portland, Coin-Op Cleveland plans to recreate a retro arcade from the late 80’s and early 90’s: flashing lights, classic cabinets, pinball, and even old CRT TVs with console favorites. The difference is that this project won’t have a liquor license, is temporary, and plans on donating profits to charity.
“We purposefully made the cost of entry cheap: one quarter. Twenty-five cents is all you need to play some really great games, meet your neighbors, see some incredible events that tap the talent in this city, and donate to fantastic charities while you’re having fun.” said Michael Scur, the other co-founder of the project. “It’s a win-win situation.”
A project of this magnitude does have a significant price-tag: $35,000. According to Kickstarter policy, the project goal must be donated by an end deadline, May 13 for Coin-Op, or donations will not be collected. “We’re confident this will get funded,” said Stanchina. “When we show someone the project website we hear ‘wow, that’s a really great idea!’ – at this point it’s just a matter of spreading the word.”
Donations can be submitted through the project’s Kickstarter page, found at www.coinopcleveland.com.
