Worcester Tax Expert Explains The Risk of Do-It-Yourself Taxes

WORCESTER, Mass. – Turbo Tax and other tax softwares don’t have the best track record. Even former Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner, testified on irregularities in his very own returns due to the software. Plus, in recent years a $1 Billion class action lawsuit was filed Philly against the federal “FreeFile” program, because of alleged gross misstatements of fees and deceptive standards. Tax expert Jay Walia gives a new perspective.

“Using those programs can easily lose you hundreds or thousands, because you’re trusting them to find you the best deductions possible. Often there’s so much left on the table because they just don’t catch everything,” Walia warned. “It’s not even a matter of following instructions properly. Things just often get missed because there’s not an expert there looking at all the details. Clients come in all the time with previous year’s returns, only to have my staff and I locate large amounts of money for them that their software didn’t catch.”
 
An additional risk with DIY is the possibility of selecting an incorrect form or filing method. Just as soon as the IRS catches a discrepancy, the taxpayer is unknowingly dropped on an audit list.

 “No one wants the IRS to come digging. Not to mention, when you don’t have a tax pro backing your return, not only do you have to deal with the mess of an audit, you get stuck handling the IRS on your own. It seems like a great idea to do it yourself, because the softwares seem easy. But don’t be deceived. The risk is too great,” Walia said.
