Sugar Land EA Recommends “Interviewing” Your Tax Professional

SUGAR LAND, TX. – Not all tax preparers are the same. Some don’t guarantee their work at all. Some do, but don’t stand behind it when an IRS letter comes. Others offer guarantees that don’t actually benefit “you,” the taxpayer. Local Enrolled Agent and tax expert, Pamela Britz, explains how to sift through the muck and find a preparer who is right for you.

“It’s true that unfortunately, not all tax preparers are the same. It’s not that I think poorly of any of my fellow colleagues in the tax profession. It’s just that some tax preparers offer guarantees that are truly better than others. For example, protection against an IRS audit, or speed and accuracy of the tax return. A taxpayer should look for a professional that offers guarantees that are actually worthwhile,” Britz recommended.

Weak guarantees include: 1) offering to have the return completed by April 15th, (shouldn’t it be?) and 2) offering to prepare your tax return the same day they meet with you (that’s great and all, but when will it be completed?). Taxpayers can go to any tax preparer, so when entrusting someone to handle your taxes, make sure they have your best interests in mind, and even in writing.

“I suggest requesting the guarantee in writing, just to make sure they’ve got your back in case of an audit. In fact, some things to look for specifically are tax return accuracy, how quickly they’ll complete your return, offering to get you the most money back legally possible, and especially IRS protection even years after filing. It might mean interviewing your tax preparer, but sometimes that’s what it takes to make sure you have the best filing experience possible,” Britz said.
