Artists Among Many Featured in Muscle Shoals Documentary at the Festival

The O2 — Sundance Institute and The O2 announced that the second Sundance London film and music festival will host a musical performance by Gregg Allman and John Paul White of The Civil Wars, sharing a stage for the first time, on Saturday 27 April at indigO2 in The O2. The performance will take place in conjunction with the UK premiere of Greg “Freddy” Camalier’s acclaimed music documentary, Muscle Shoals. Tickets and a music-and-movie ticket package for The Music of Muscle Shoals: An Evening with Gregg Allman and John Paul White of The Civil Wars, with opening act to be announced, will be on sale from 9:00 a.m. GMT Friday 15 March at www.sundance-london.com.

Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Gregg Allman is a founding member of one of the biggest and most important American bands of all time, the still-active and thriving Allman Brothers Band, whose memorable signature hits include the classics “Whipping Post,” “Dreams,” “Please Call Home” and “Melissa.” A natural artist with a beautifully soulful and distinctive voice as well as brilliant keyboard and guitar expertise, Allman’s six solo albums include Laid Back, the live Gregg Allman Tour ’74, Playin’ Up A Storm and I’m No Angel.

John Paul White soothes the soul with his intensely poetic, highly inspired music. He was born and still lives in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, U.S.A. White released the album The Long Goodbye in 2008 and joined Joy Williams the following year to form The Civil Wars. The duo won Grammy Awards in 2012 for best Folk Album, and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group.

On his involvement with Sundance and working with Allman, John Paul White said, “For musicians raised in the heart of the South, the Allman Brothers are gods. Count me among the worshipers. I’m honoured immensely to be included in this project in any small way, and working with one of my heroes excites me to no end.”

With interviews from an incredible roster of musicians, Muscle Shoals unearths the rich musical history of a tiny Alabama town with the curious name of Muscle Shoals, an unheralded gold mine of American music. At the heart of Muscle Shoals is Rick Hall; overcoming crushing hardship, he managed to entice talent like Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett. As the word spread about the electrifying musical chemistry in this unexpected place, the likes of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Staples Singers, the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Simon and Garfunkel magnetically followed suit.

The second Sundance London will take place from 25-28 April, 2013, and host the international and UK premieres of American independent films fresh from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, U.S.A., as well as live music performances, panels and events. The 2013 film programme, announced on Monday 11 March, continues its 2012 focus on presenting new work by American filmmakers and music artists. Sundance Institute, which annually presents the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, U.S.A, selected the films and related programming. Individual film and panel tickets will also go on sale Friday.

In addition to the performance by Gregg Allman and John Paul White, Sundance London will host a previously announced performance by Peaches on Friday 26 April. Tickets for that performance are now on sale.
