DuluxGroup has won the 2013 Gartner Business Intelligence (BI) Excellence Award for Asia Pacific, presented at the Gartner Business Intelligence & Information Management Summit in Sydney this week.

Run for the third time in Asia Pacific by global technology research and advisory firm Gartner, the Business Intelligence Excellence Award recognises and rewards the most successful recent BI implementations.

Paul Sullivan, business intelligence team lead at DuluxGroup, told delegates about a significant yet cost-effective upgrade to the company’s BI systems following its demerger from resources giant Orica in 2010.

The company was using an older version of SAP’s Business Warehouse and Business Objects solutions, and upgraded these systems to allow the addition of newer technologies such as mobile BI, geo-mapping as well as improved integration and data visualisation to be ready to take advantage of the next available technologies in the future.

The team won the support of end-users by providing a self-serve environment with single sign-on security, fast response to data questions, improved data structures and system performance for them to easily access and consume information. The company’s core values were linked to key performance indicators (KPIs) and the new BI system gave executives the ability to track the KPIs on a mobile application and drill into the report for more detail. A key benefit was the ability for senior management to track daily sales data and so make quicker decisions about the business.

Based on savings from cost of upgrades and support of legacy structures, the project had an estimated return on investment of 207 percent over five years The DuluxGroup BI team’s efforts were supplemented by Business Objects and SAP Basis expertise from SAP Partner Oxygen Business Solutions when the pressure was on to deliver.

DuluxGroup is an Australian-owned, publicly-listed company with headquarters in Melbourne. It is a manufacturer and marketer of premium branded products including paints, stains and coatings, household cleaners and car and garden care products, with well-known brands including Selleys, Berger, British Paints, Ratsak and Yates.

The Gartner Business Intelligence Excellence Awards are run every second year in Asia Pacific and this year attracted submissions from organisations across the region, representing large and mid-size organisations from a variety of industry sectors, including private sector, government and non-profit. Past winners were food packaging giant Tetra Pak (2009) and Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (2011).

Gartner’s BI research analysts evaluated the applicants and selected three finalists, who presented their case studies to more than 400 delegates at the Gartner Business Intelligence and Information Management Summit in Sydney this week. Delegates then voted to select the award winner.

Speaking at the Summit, Gartner research director and award judge Daniel Yuen said the quality of the presentations from all three finalists was outstanding and demonstrated global best practices.
