EMSL Contributes to Aspergillus section Versicolores Species Discovery

EMSL scientist, Dr. Zeljko Jurjevic, along with colleagues from the U.S., Italy, and Croatia have discovered that eight of the nine newly discovered Aspergillus species in section Versicolores have the capability to produce Sterigmatocystin, a mycotoxin that is a carcinogenic precursor to aflatoxin B1. Aspergillus section Versicolores species are commonly isolated from indoor environments, soil, hypersaline water, and various foods and feed. Dr. Jurjevic has also published a paper on this topic which can be found at: http://www.imafungus.org/Issue/33/17.pdf. Due to their ubiquitous distribution and capability to produce a carcinogenic mycotoxin, they may be associated with many health issues in humans and animals.
