“In addition to having worked on dental cases over the last couple of years, I have attended lectures by oral surgeon Lee M. (”Mac“) Whitesides, DMD, MMSc of Northside Oral Surgery in Atlanta” said the Atlanta legal nurse.

Whitesides lectured both at the September meeting of the Atlanta chapter of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) and in October 2012 via webinar for the national AALNC organization of legal nurse consultants.

During the September talk, Whitesides gave an overview of dental situations that could result in a lawsuits. He also discussed dental implants, basic dental terms, anatomy and procedures, effective communication with patients, ADA Referral Guidelines and Cone Beam CT advantages when standard X-rays are not revealing enough information to the dentist.

In October for the national AALNC webinar, Whitesides devoted the hour to dental infections. This included the etiology and bacteriology of dental infections, presenting symptoms of the patient, principles of treatment and effective treatment. Discussion of BRONJ (Biphosphonate Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw) and osteomyelitis followed. Lastly, cervical necrotizing fasciitis as an extreme and rare result of dental infection was covered.

 
About Dr. Whitesides:

Dr. “Mac” Whitesides is originally from North Carolina and attended Davidson College obtaining a B.S. in Biology, went on to Emory University in Atlanta studying Medical Science in Anesthesia and Patient Monitoring and completed his doctorate in Medical Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia.
