Many people enter the safety and health profession from a wide variety of backgrounds.  Over time, with practice, on-the-job education, meetings and conferences, many of these professionals become highly effective safety and health practitioners.

The Institute for Safety and Health Management, who administer the Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) certification and Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM) program, has developed a new certification program to recognize these important safety practitioners.    The new certification is known as the Certified Safety Management Practitioner (CSMP) program.  The CSMP is designed to recognize those employees whose duties include performing occupational safety and health management activities either on a part-time or full-time basis.

A CSMP might be an active safety team participant, line manager, human resources professional or a wage associate.   This new certification recognizes those who have attained a level of knowledge, training and experience to manage a safety and health assignment competently and professionally.

“While the scope of the CSMP is similar in nature to the CSHM and ASHM, the CSMP recognizes those who have taken a less formal safety and health education path,” reported Larry Curtis, CSHM, Executive Director of ISHM.  “In addition to technical knowledge of occupational safety and health, a safety management practitioner would be expected to perform day to day work under the direction of a safety manager and may be involved in business and financial responsibilities.  The practitioner needs to have an understanding of issues such as hazard analyses, incident investigations, safety audits and surveys, workers’ compensation, product safety, environmental laws, quality, and labor relations,” he continued.
