Texas School District Raises the Grade on Identity Infrastructure With Infoblox Network Identity Appliances

Sunnyvale, CA, 03/07/2005, Infoblox Inc., the leading developer of network identity infrastructure systems, today announced that the Spring Independent School District (Spring ISD), one of the fastest growing school districts in Harris County, Texas, with over 28,000 students in 25 schools, has selected and deployed Infoblox network identity appliances to improve the reliability and reduce the management complexity of its network identity infrastructure.

Spring ISD, located 20 miles north of downtown Houston, supports more than 10,000 nodes on its network, including approximately 2,500 IP phones, providing students, teachers and administrative staff 24x7 access to critical network resources and the Internet. With the original infrastructure, based on general-purpose servers and operating systems running freeware domain name system (DNS) and dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) software, Spring ISD experienced reliability, management and scalability issues that not only consumed IT resources, but impacted network users.

Since selecting and replacing the previous solution with Infoblox DNSone™ network identity infrastructure appliances, Spring ISD IT personnel have been able to improve service with less demands on IT staff, enabling them to successfully redeploy resources to other projects and generate positive feedback from users.

“First and foremost, because there is no server to manage or underlying OS to maintain, the Infoblox appliances allowed us to reduce the resources we spent on delivering DHCP and DNS services,” said Pete Davis, Spring ISD network engineer. “We initially deployed the DNSone appliances for internal service delivery, but we have been so pleased with the performance -- even receiving comments from teachers and staff that they have enjoyed more reliable services -- that we are considering expanding our Infoblox deployment to provide external DNS functionality.”

Spring ISD deployed two Infoblox DNSone appliances at its central office. One serves as an authoritative device and the other as a back-up so that in the unlikely event the first device fails, availability of DNS and DHCP network services is maintained.

Infoblox DNSone appliances are designed to provide the foundation for next-generation network identity services in a secure and easy-to-manage form factor. The hardened appliance design and intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) enable the offloading of DNS and DHCP services from general-purpose servers that typically handle multiple functions and require significant administration overhead. Instead, these services can be easily managed by a purpose-built, high-availability (HA) appliance that is inherently secure, reliable and scalable, freeing network administration resources and providing increased security for these critical network identity services.
