The new company takes over management of the service on the 1st of January.

“ATLL Concessionària de la Generalitat de Catalunya SA”, lead by ACCIONA Agua signed the 50-year concession contract today for the management of Aigües Ter Llobregat (ATLL), by which it shall provide the “capture point network” water supply service to the city of Barcelona, its metropolitan area and nine surrounding districts, with a combined population of approximately five million people. The contract scope includes resource capture at source (rivers Ter and Llobregat and desalination plants) to its delivery to the municipal reservoirs, from where the local administration or concessionary “consumer point network” service company distributes water directly to the consumers. This concession comes into force on the 1st of January 2013.

The signing of the award contract by the Department for Territory and Sustainability of the Generalitat de Catalunya was possible after complying with all administrative requirements for the contracting process as set out in the Law governing Public Sector Contracting. During this act, just as laid out in the conditions document, the concessionary company paid the first fee amount of 298.65 million Euros.

The concessionary company is lead by ACCIONA Agua (39%) and among its shareholders is the Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual (39%), together with other minority companies representing private investors. The concession consists of the management, operation and improvement of the installations making up the Ter-Llobregat supply network, including water treatment, storage and transport. The Generalitat shall maintain full ownership of the hydraulic infrastructures.

The installations managed by ATLL include four large plants, the Abrera and Cardedeu purification plants, for the waters from the Llobregat and Ter rivers, together with the Prat del Llobregat and La Tordera desalination plants and several pumping stations and over nine hundred kilometres of piping.

ACCIONA Agua is one of the leading companies in the world of drinking water construction and management services. More than seventy million people benefit from ACCIONA Agua operations and services (desalination, purification, potabilisation and comprehensive management of water services). During its existence it has constructed over four hundred purification plants and more than seventy desalination plants. ACCIONA Agua is currently operating more than three hundred water treatment plants for a population of over forty million people.

In particular, ACCIONA Agua has constructed and is operating installations which, as the case of ATLL, manage capture point network water supplies. Among others, the desalination plant at Beckton (London) in the United Kingdom, the Tampa (Florida, the United States) desalination plant, one of the three largest desalination plants in the world in Adelaide (Australia), together with the potabilisation plant in Perth, which is also in Australia. In addition, it is currently constructing the world’s largest purification plant at Atotonilco, Mexico), which will treat water to supply 10.5 million people and be in operation for twenty-five years.
