New deployment expands network coverage in Northern Emirates

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - July 17, 2006 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced a network expansion and optimization contract with Emirates Telecommunications Corporation, etisalat, to enhance the operator’s wireless network in the Northern Emirates.

The expansion is designed to increase etisalat’s subscriber capacity and enable the operator to offer new high speed data and voice services to its subscribers in the Northern Emirates via EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) technology.

Essa Al Haddad, chief marketing officer, etisalat, said, “Working with a reputable and reliable partner like Motorola shows our commitment to providing customers with the best and most advanced telecommunications systems, services and solutions. Our goal is to extend customers’ reach beyond the limitations of space and matter, and we are sure that partnering with Motorola will ease our work towards this mission.”

EDGE is a solution that enables the transmission of increased amounts of data at a high speed. For operators such as etisalat, EDGE extends the capacity of the mobile network and enables faster transmission of data. Customers benefit from the ‘always connected’ status of EDGE networks and increased access to 3G applications.

“Having worked successfully with etisalat in the UAE for many years, this network expansion and extensive services network optimization contract further demonstrates our capabilities, and highlights Motorola’s commitment to providing telecommunications services and meeting etisalat’s expectations in delivering high quality service and improved connectivity to its customers in the Northern Emirates region,” said Ali Amer, senior director of sales for Motorola Networks & Enterprise in the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan.

“The Northern Emirates is experiencing a period of rapid development and the growing population will greatly benefit from the quality of our cutting-edge wireless infrastructure,” he added.

A portion of the revenue on this contract was recognized by Motorola in the second quarter of 2006.

About EDGE
The growth of Mobile Data Traffic and the introduction of new data applications will drive the need for more capacity and higher speed in operators’ mobile data networks. EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) is a method for increasing the data capacity of GSM by using new modulation techniques on the air interface. Typically EDGE will move the end-user data speed into the 200 Kbit/s class, thereby enabling advanced applications. It will also increase the capacity of the network, enabling operators to use their Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and core networks in a highly efficient manner, limiting CAPEX spending while increasing data revenue.
