Online Divorce for the New Year?

There’s been a lot of talk about the end of the world in 2012, but what a great deal of married people have been quietly thinking about is how to get divorced before the year is over. Sound sad? Divorce is never easy on the emotions, but for many, it can be freeing, especially if the marriage has been over in every way but on paper.
 
In years past, clergy would always have shaken its head at divorce. Nearly all religions of the world have looked down on divorce, but attitudes about divorce are changing. “I’m not necessarily a proponent for it [divorce] but can see that there are times when it is the only logical response for some couples, especially when abuse is present or the welfare of the kids is at risk,” says Marina Halperin, a central California pastor.
 
With the New Year soon closing in, more and more couples are turning to online divorce. “We really do see an increase in numbers of people filing for divorce online,” says the owner of an online divorce website, adding, “It seems the end of the year is a time when people are ready to close one chapter and begin another. It’s like they don’t want to go into the New Year with old baggage or unmade decisions.”
 
While it does seem logical that people wouldn’t want to prolong something like an impending divorce, the holiday season seems like a particularly depressing time of year to make an announcement to the family that a divorce is on the way. But according to statistics gathered by most purveyors of online divorce, even when couples make a choice to divorce right before the year ends, they won’t make the news known to the whole family until after New Year’s Day has passed and life has returned to normal at the close of the holiday season.
