Thomson ELT and TESOL Announce Success of First Web Seminars

Participants worldwide rate seminars highly and recommend them to colleagues

Boston, MA, 07/13/2006, Thomson ELT, a leading provider of materials for English language teaching and learning throughout the world and part of The Thomson Corporation (TSX: TOC; NYSE: TOC), announced that its first online collaboration with Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL) was highly successful. TESOL is a global education association headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, in the United States. Thomson ELT is collaborating with TESOL to provide a platform for TESOL online seminars and courses.

One hundred twenty-eight teachers worldwide registered for the first seminar which was hosted by Mary Lou McCloskey and Linda New Levine. The seminar, titled “An ESOL Toolbox: Scaffolding for English Learners in Content Classrooms”, introduced eight strategic tools for supporting teachers of young English language learners in K through 8 classrooms.

The event was well-received and more than 94 percent of those surveyed rated their experience as either good or excellent and 100 percent said they would recommend the seminar to their colleagues. Additionally, about 90 percent found the virtual seminar to be user-friendly and easy to navigate. Those unable to attend the webcast may access an archived version for 3 months after the event date.

A second seminar titled, “Notions of Teachers’ Language Proficiency in English Language Teaching: Perceptions, Practice, and Research” was held on June 14th. More than 100 teachers worldwide registered for the event presented by Lía D. Kamhi-Stein and Ahmar Mahboob.

“I participated, along with other teachers from Argentina, in the ”Teachers’ Language Proficiency in English Language Teaching [seminar].“ It was really outstanding in every respect: content, topic, organization, and interaction. We were delighted with the program and speakers. I want to thank TESOL for having organized a professional event of this quality, and for having made it accessible overseas,” said Mabel Gallo of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
