After School Tutorials with English and Maths Tutors Increase Student’s Confidence in Learning

PERTH, Western Australia November, 2012 – With the heated discussion in the media and amongst politicians about falling literacy and numeracy levels of our great nation’s young people, it’s no wonder concerned Aussie parents are looking for options outside the traditional education system to ensure their child is not left behind and unable to read at least at an ‘average’ level.

According to the National Tuition Survey, the average age of children beginning after-school tutoring is 10 years old and at least 62.2% of students take on tuition before they reach the age of 12 years. Approximately 92% of parents prefer face-to-face and one-on-one tutoring methods, as they believe it increases the self-esteem and confidence of their children*.

Janice McGuire, Teaching Manager of Perth maths and English tutoring service NumberWorks’nWords says, “We believe that when children are working individually with an experienced tutor they feel as though they can answer questions and be committed to their education without peer pressure to ‘look cool’ and not care about school. They also have the full attention of their tutor so if they don’t understand something it is spotted and resolved straight away. This increase in understanding due to the face-to-face method of tutoring often leads to an increase in self-confidence and is the reason we only provide tutoring services in a one-on-one tutoring situation.”

According to Janice from NumberWorks’nWords, there are several benefits to after-school tuition that aren’t found in the classroom:
·         Children concentrate more as they are in a distraction-free environment.
·         Children can learn in a way that caters to their unique learning needs, as tutors can cater each lesson to that one student.
·         Children are not ‘left behind’ because the tutor is able to concentrate on the topics that that particular child needs more work in, until they ‘get it’.
·         In tutoring, children are in an environment where meeting social objectives is not the focus, but instead performing well academically is the goal, so they usually display more enthusiasm for their own education.
·         89% of parents found that tuition increased their children’s confidence and 95% of them were given proof that it indeed supports the individual needs of the child.

NumberWorks’nWords offers maths and English tuition programs that are face-to-face, one-on-one, designed to suit the individual student’s needs and designed to achieve measureable goals for the student.

The Maths tutors and English tutors at NumberWorks’nWords conduct a comprehensive assessment at the beginning of the course so that the needs of the child are easily identified and used to design a unique course specifically targeted at the areas where that student needs more support.

Jennifer M., the parent of a child who was coached by the Perth primary school tutors at NumberWorks’nWords, says that “[her] child struggled with Maths from day one.  It is with great relief that she is now performing at an age appropriate level and more importantly is enjoying it.”
