Detroit Woman Loses 36 Pounds and Takes Charge of Her Diabetes Management

In conjunction with American Diabetes Month, Nutrisystem is revealing a series of related weight loss success stories. The second real-life testimonial is that of a woman whose loss of a brother to diabetes in 2002 became the wake-up call she needed to take control of the management of her own diabetes.

Mara Hall admits she was overweight her entire life and says, “as a result of my poor eating and exercise habits,” she was diagnosed with diabetes.

In 2002, Hall lost her brother to diabetes and it became the wake-up call she needed. “I knew I had to take control of my life or lose my life,” says the 36-year old Detroit native. Hall is not alone in battling this disease. According to the Michigan Department of Community Health: “the state ranks 15th highest in the nation for diabetes prevalence. Just over 9% of Michigan adults have been diagnosed with diabetes - an estimated 701,000 people. An additional 364,400 Michigan adults are estimated to have diabetes but are currently undiagnosed.”

After her brother’s death, Hall tried to lose weight but had minimal success, and her diabetes was leaving her feeling fatigued. It is well-known that one of the most common and disabling symptoms of this chronic disease is fatigue.

A chance to be a contestant on a cable TV dance show prompted Hall to consider using the opportunity to get serious about losing weight. For Hall, who loves to dance, the show was an amazing experience and she did lose some weight. However, Hall realized she still did not have the support needed to help her effectively manage her diabetes.

After the show, Hall was motivated and knew what she needed to do. “I wanted to control my diabetes and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” she says. Hall discovered the Nutrisystem®D® program, “a wonderful program for people like me who need to know the proper foods that people with diabetes can eat,” Hall says. Hall loved the variety of foods and the fact that she didn’t feel like she was depriving herself of what she likes to call the “good stuff.” Hall also found the convenience of leaving her house for the day and taking her meals and snacks with her also helped prevent her from being tempted to eat the wrong food. She’s taken her adherence to eating well one step further. “Write down everything that you eat daily in a food journal,” advises Hall, “if you can see what you are eating, you won’t overeat.”

The Nutrisystem D program is specifically designed for people with diabetes, and those who are at risk for diabetes, to effectively lose weight and help manage their blood glucose. The home-delivered, portion-controlled, nutritionally balanced weight loss program is based on the science of the low glycemic index and meets the nutritional guidelines of the American Diabetes Association®.** Nutrisystem D, in combination with counseling sessions, has been clinically proven to be effective in helping people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and manage their blood glucose. **American Diabetes Association: Standards of medical care in diabetes - 2012 (Position Statement). Diabetes Care 35 (suppl.1): S11-S63.

Since going on Nutrisystem D Hall has lost 36 lbs.* and has gone from a size 22 to a 14-16. Because of her weight loss her blood glucose and A1C have improved and she’s feeling so much better.

Studies have shown that losing even relatively little weight can have a substantial impact on preventing or delaying the progression of type 2 diabetes. Several independent studies, including the NIH multicenter study known as Look AHEAD (Action for HEAlth in Diabetes), have shown that losing as little as 5%-10% of body weight has significant beneficial effects not only on health measures like blood glucose control, but also on quality of life and medication costs in people with type 2 diabetes.

*Results not typical.
On Nutrisystem®, you can expect to lose at least 1-2 lbs per week. In clinical studies, subjects on Nutrisystem D. in combination with counseling sessions, lost an avg of about 14 lbs in 3 months, and 18 lbs in 6 months. Individuals are remunerated. Weight lost on prior Nutrisystem® program.
