France, - On 13 November, Carrefour opened its new La Chapelle Saint-Luc hypermarket in the new “Escapade” shopping centre located in the Aube département (north-eastern France).
The new store covers an area of 7000 m² and is geared towards meeting the needs of consumers in the Troyes urban area, with a tailor-made offering of high-quality products and services at competitive prices. Because Carrefour is committed to maximising its consumers’ purchasing power, the new La Chapelle Saint Luc store is offering “Guaranteed Lowest Price” pledges on 2000 every-day national brand products.

A suburban store offering an outstanding range of food products at competitive prices

The La Chapelle Saint-Luc Carrefour hypermarket is an example of the banner’s desire to create modern and tailor-made stores offering a range of products that have been carefully selected to meet the specific needs of its customer base and the local area.

Located right in the centre of the Escapade shopping centre and covering a sales area of 7,000 m², the hypermarket has a wide selection (45,000 items) of both food and non-food products and a wide food selection, comprising more than 21,000 items.

Particular emphasis is placed on fresh products: fruit and vegetables, fish, meat and traditional cured meat products, freshly cooked meats and delicatessen products are all on sale by genuine professionals. There is also a focus on regional products: 320 items are available, including products made by Lemelle (which sells cured meat products and traditional Troyes andouillette - coarse-grained sausage made with pork), cheeses made by Lincet (including Chaource) and honey made by Danton. The store also boasts a number of other new features: there is a section completely dedicated to organic products (with 930 items), “products of the world” and “halal” sections, as well as a cellar section which has a wide selection of 650 wines.

The non-food range covers essential day-to-day and household needs and includes textiles, small electrical appliances, tableware, stationery, media products and DIY accessories. Note: a newspaper and magazine section has been created with 3,500 publications, books are showcased on bookcases in the Culture area, Carrefour has entered into a partnership agreement with Apple in the Multimedia area and a special seasonal section sells a broad range of special-offer items to do with various major events throughout the year.

Mindful of the pressure on the purchasing power of families, Carrefour is introducing practical measures to help them make savings every day. The store lists thousands of Carrefour brand products and guarantees the lowest prices on the market on over 2,000 of the most popular national-brand products, including dairy products, cured meats, biscuits, household cleaning products and petrol. For customers with Carrefour pass cards, Carrefour La Chapelle Saint Luc gives them a 5% reduction every day on Carrefour-brand food products.

Services to make life easier for families

The La Chapelle Saint-Luc Carrefour hypermarket features a range of services designed to make life easier for families. These include a vehicle hire service, kits to help you move house, tickets for shows, parcel delivery service, photo print kiosks, finance and insurance solutions under the Carrefour Banque banner, a 24h service station and a brand-new automatic gas distribution service.
There is also a Carrefour Drive right next to the store with a team that has been specially trained to provide the service. Carrefour Drive is a fast, practical and economic solution. Customers simply submit their orders online (from home, for example) and pick up the groceries at the Carrefour Drive later, at a time convenient for them. They can then choose from a wide selection of food products and other items – over 10,000 items, all available at the same prices as in the store.

A whole range of clean and innovative technologies

The La Chapelle Saint-Luc Carrefour hypermarket is part of a new shopping centre concept based on the “spirit of nature", which encourages people to walk. The store’s construction and the way in which it is managed reflect the company’s sustainable development policy and are in line with the centre’s HQE (High Environmental Quality) standards.

Numerous steps have been taken, for example, to reduce the store’s impact on the environment and limit its CO2 emissions.

Carrefour La Chapelle Saint-Luc has closed refrigerated cabinets for all of its fresh products (yoghurt, dairy products, delicatessen, etc.), as well as its frozen foods. All its refrigerated cabinets are double glazed, with full LED lighting. The aim is to reduce the store’s energy consumption by around 20% and decrease the size of its cooling equipment by approximately 30%.
The store’s cooling system is even more environmentally friendly, using CO2 as a refrigeration fluid. This type of fluid has 3900 times less impact on global warming and produces very low greenhouse gas emissions.

Other steps have also been taken to reduce the store’s impact on the environment, such as using LED technology for lighting it, setting up “booster” air diffusers for reducing the cold power and airflow by 30% compared with conventional solutions and a methanisation system for treating organic waste.

A local employer

By building this store in La Chapelle Saint-Luc, Carrefour is playing a part in the urban renovation programme for the Troies urban area and is contributing to both the economic and social development of the municipality and towns and cities in the surrounding area. One of the ways in which it does this is by recruiting 59 people to supplement the current team. More than 62% of these new recruits are on permanent contracts, helping employment at local level in the long term.
In addition to these permanent contracts, the store has offered fixed-term and training contracts - as well as student jobs - to people living in and around Troyes. It has done this in collaboration with a number of bodies involved in local employment, including the Pôle Emploi and various local taskforces.

The Carrefour Group’s internal mobility policy has also meant that staff from other stores have been able to move closer to their home regions.

A major training scheme has been set up so that all of the store’s staff can familiarise themselves with the new technologies and services available (Drive, Cash management, touch screens, self-service checkouts, traditional butchers and pastry shops). In total, more than 500 hours of training have been delivered.
