Salmonellosis is an infection caused by bacteria called Salmonella. The bacteria has been known to cause illness for over 100 years and according to the CDC, approximately 40,000 cases of the illness are reported in the United States each year. Because many milder cases are not diagnosed or reported, the actual number of infections may be thirty or more times greater.

EMSL Analytical has harnessed the power of Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) to identify this microbial pathogen.  EMSL utilizes this cutting edge molecular technique that analyzes for the genetic material known as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) to quickly and accurately identify when this bacteria is present in all types of environmental and food samples.

People infected with Salmonella typically develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts from 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. However, in some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. If not properly treated, the infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other parts of the body. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.

“Infections due to Salmonella can result in death in extreme cases,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “EMSL have harnessed qPCR to identify a host of microbial contaminants and pathogens, including Salmonella.  This is an exceptionally fast, accurate, sensitive and specific alternative analysis that has many advantages over traditional microbiological methods that involve culturing the bacteria which takes days instead of hours.”
