The Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) has been the “gold standard” for more than 50 years, attaining uncompromised integrity, global recognition and career-lasting value.  Early this year the ABIH, who administer the certification program, released an online video describing the CIH program which is universally recognized as the premier occupational hygiene certification in the world.

The video was made public last May and discusses the many benefits of the CIH certification to professionals who practice industrial hygiene.  Only about 6700 people worldwide currently hold this esteemed professional certification. It is a discriminating process whereby only the best industrial hygienists are able to achieve the CIH credential.

Education, experience and examination have always served as the foundation to be ABIH-certified in industrial hygiene. Currently, to meet the education qualification a typical qualified candidate comes from a regionally accredited college or university, with a Bachelor’s Degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, physics or an ABET accredited program in industrial hygiene or safety. Other colleges and degrees will be considered by the ABIH provided that there is an emphasis on science, mathematics, engineering, or science-related technology. In addition, the candidate must have additional training specifically addressing ethics, industrial hygiene toxicology, fundamentals, measurements and controls.

Academic knowledge alone does not qualify an individual to be a competent Industrial Hygienist; rather, it is the experience qualification that provides the synergistic ingredient. There is an “art” to applying the technical principles in a manner that provides an effective solution for a workplace health issue. Often, this is best obtained through a relationship with a practicing Certified Industrial Hygienist, mentors or networks who can teach the nuances in applying the book knowledge in the real world. Further, because the CIH examination covers many broad IH rubrics, the experience qualification allows time for more exposure to a wide variety of real-world conditions. Therefore, several years of broad experience are necessary before a person may sit for the CIH examination.

“The movie cements the idea that once you attain this credential, it really means something,” reported Tracy Parsons, CIH, Administrative Program Manager at ABIH.  “Being a CIH has led to increased professional credibility, personal satisfaction and a competitive edge for job placement and advancement. This is not surprising given the outstanding talent of our CIHs. They are an elite group of professionals.”
