Entrepreneurs’ Organization’s Global Student Entrepreneur Awards Names Midwest Finalist

Detroit, MI – October 11, 2012 - The Entrepreneurs’ Organization’s (EO) Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA), the premier global competition for students who have founded and operate businesses while attending college or university, today announced that Sarah Haselkorn, Washington University, St. Louis student and founder of Green Bean, was the winner of the Thrive Midwestern Regional Competition. Haselkorn will now move on to the Global Finals to compete for $250,000 in cash and in-kind business services at the New York Stock Exchange in November to fuel the next phase of her company’s growth.
Sarah Haselkorn, founder of Green Bean and 2012 Entrepreneurs’ Organization’s GSEA Thrive regional winner said “I have had a passion for entrepreneurship since I began running a summer camp in the seventh grade out of a three-ring binder. This competition is an amazing opportunity for me to network with like-minded students and seasoned business veterans that will help me grow and develop as an entrepreneur.”
Haselkorn, a senior at Washington University, St. Louis majoring in Systems Science & Engineering, founded Green Bean as a junior in January 2011. The fast-casual, salad and wrap restaurant in the Central West End in St. Louis, MO. is “green” from the floor boards to the food. When converting the space into a 20-seat eatery, Green Bean salvaged all the wood from the previous business and recycled it throughout the space. All of the food, cutlery and dishes used in the restaurant are compostable or recyclable and all the ingredients are fresh and locally grown.
“EO’s Global Student Entrepreneur Awards is an incredible opportunity for new business leaders who want to push their development and take their business to the next level,” said Adam Robinson, founder of Hireology and sub-committee chair for the Entrepreneurs’ Organization’s GSEA.
A program of the EntrepreneursOrganization (EO), the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards celebrates students who are defying the odds and taking the American dream into their own hands. Balancing final exams with fiscal year budgets out of their dorm rooms, each of the young CEOs participating in the competition have built revenue generating businesses during one of the toughest economies in a generation.  The Thrive Midwestern Regional Competition brought four semi-finalists from across the Midwest to Detroit, where they presented their current businesses and future projections, as well as their personal passion for entrepreneurship. In addition to Green Bean, participating companies included a presentation and video design company, a provider of landscaping and auto services, and a developer of an Android-enabled Geiger Counter. Besting the competition, Haselkorn will face-off at the Global Finals. November 14-16 at the New York Stock Exchange for the title of Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year, from among the top 30 regional finalists competing from more than 42 countries around the world.
