NFC: More Than Mobile Payments

Exploring possibilities with near field communication.

Near Field Communication (NFC) is best known as the technology used for many mobile payment solutions. However, there are many other innovative ways developers are bringing NFC to applications.

NFC lets devices in close proximity communicate with one another, enabling activities ranging from entertainment to gaming to social sharing – taking them from the virtual world to the physical world. App developers are currently experimenting with NFC to bring new ideas to market that will help change the way consumers use their devices.

During October, several events for developers will take place in major U.S. cities to encourage innovation in NFC mobile app development. The events, part of a series called TAPPED: The NFC Accelerator, will be held in New York City, San Francisco and Boston, and offer app developers access to expert advice from professionals at Samsung, Verizon, Facebook and other leading companies, along with the chance to win cash prizes.

The goal of the TAPPED events is to explore NFC and to encourage creative thinking around the kinds of apps that leverage this technology increasingly found in smartphones and other devices.
