Last month, Fox News published a report about bisphenol A (BPA).  “BPA may boost artery disease risk” discussed a new study that examined the BPA levels of 591 people whose doctors suspected they had severe coronary artery disease (CAD).  Researchers discovered that the BPA levels in those who were later diagnosed with the condition was higher.

Bisphenol A is a chemical that has been used for more than 40 years in the manufacturing of many hard plastic food containers, reusable cups, and the lining of metal food and beverage cans.  Trace amounts of BPA can be found in some foods packaged in these containers.

The chemical is a known endocrine disruptor and low amounts may mimic a person’s own hormones.  In 2010, Canada declared BPA a toxic substance.  Also that year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned of possible hazards to fetuses, infants, and young children.  The U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) has expressed concerns regarding BPA’s adverse effects to the “brain, behavior and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children.”

“A number of manufacturers of reusable water bottles, and other plastic containers, now market products that are labeled as free of BPAs,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, a leading consumer product testing laboratory.  “This information is great for consumer, but unfortunately most products do not state if BPA has been used.  This leaves the consumer vulnerable to exposure.  EMSL offers BPA testing services for consumers, product manufacturers, distributors and retailers across the country.”
