Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of hundreds of “eebrake” aftermarket bicycle brakes.  According to the CPSC release, the bridge of the brake can crack, posing a fall hazard to riders.  The brakes, for use on adult road racing bicycles, were sold at specialty bicycle retailers nationwide and at the company’s website from September of 2008 through March of 2011.

The CPSC release states, “The recalled models have both a white “ee” logo on the front of the brakes and a five-digit serial number beginning with either “80xxx” or “09xxx” engraved on either the front or the back of the strut portion of the brake.”

To date, the company that distributes the brakes has received several reports of the brakes cracking and at least one injury has occurred. Product failures like this can result in injuries and be extremely costly to manufacturers and distributors.  When a part failure comes to light it is important that the root cause of the failure be quickly investigated and understood.  One company that has extensive experience in this field is EMSL Analytical, Inc.

At EMSL, the company provides a wide range of material testing, characterization and forensic laboratory services.  “EMSL’s Materials Science Division can help clients develop solutions to challenges in manufacturing, quality assurance, and research and development,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL.  “A material failure resulting in a product’s recall, which may have resulted from material or design problems, can have far reaching consequences.  EMSL’s research scientists help product manufacturers, distributors, and retailers test products before they go to market.  If a product failure has already occurred, EMSL can identify the root cause of the problem to prevent further issues,” he continued.

EMSL’s laboratory is supported by Ph.D. scientists and a broad array of instrumentation that can apply a full spectrum of standard and customized analyses including elemental and chemical, structural, particle, surface, contaminant, mechanical, failure, and bio-effectiveness to any project.  To learn more about materials testing services, please visit www.EMSL.com, call (800)220-3675 or email info@EMSL.com .
