The Brisbrane Times reports that nearly 25,000 cars, manufactured in China and exported to Australia, are expected to be recalled after some of their parts were found to be contaminated with asbestos.

The asbestos was detected in the car’s engines and exhaust gaskets. Ateco Automotive, the company that imported the affected vehicles, has reportedly known about the issue for months. They are currently working with the government to implement a course of action. The plan should be announced within a few days.

Ateco has stated that they are awaiting a ruling from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. However, reports state that some of the vehicle’s asbestos gaskets will not be replaced due to the complexity of the process.

Inhalation of asbestos can be very harmful if individuals are exposed for long durations. Asbestos fibers travel into the body and attack soft tissue. Exposure to asbestos can result in mesothelioma cancer, lung disease, and chronic cough.

Asbestos has long been used to make components of automobiles, particularly brake pads and linings, clutches, and gaskets—although newer parts are less likely to contain the hazardous material. For this reason, auto mechanics are urged to take special precautions when repairing brakes and clutches.

“Unfortunately, you cannot determine whether car parts are contaminated with asbestos just by looking at them,” says Ed Cahill, Vice President of EMSL Analytical, Inc.’s Asbestos Division. “All of EMSL’s locations, in the United States and Canada, are fully equipped and accredited to test for the presence of asbestos in air, soil, water, and bulk building materials.”
