According to the Environmental Protective Agency (EPA), the E.C. Electroplating building in Garfield, NJ will be carefully torn down due to hexavalent chromium contamination. Groundwater beneath the building has also been impacted by the chemical, which affects nearby residents as the water seeps into their basements.

Preliminary samples reveal that parts of the E.P. Electroplating building, its two basements, and soils beneath the building are all contaminated with hexavalent chromium. The entire building must be demolished to ensure all contaminated materials are removed as well as the contaminated soil underneath.

Exposure to hexavalent chromium increases the risk of lung cancer and nervous system damage. Inhaling high levels of hexavalent chromium can also damage the nose, throat, and lungs. Direct contact with hexavalent chromium in high concentrations or for long periods of time can damage the eyes and skin.

“Hexavalent chromium is a very toxic chemical that is used to make many products, including metal alloys, anticorrosive agents, and pigments,” states Vince Daliessio, CIH, Project Manager at EMSL Analytical. “EMSL is one of the nation’s leading industrial hygiene testing laboratories and offers advanced testing for hexavalent chromium needed to achieve compliance with OSHA’s hexavalent chromium standard.”
