Dateline NBC Airs Expanded HVAC Investigative Report Featuring Industry Expert Bobby Ring

On August 17, Dateline NBC featured an undercover investigative report on home air conditioning system repairs.

The airing of this extended piece was the result of overwhelming consumer response to its original appearance in the “Rossen Report” during the Today Show on July 10, 2012.

The report centered on a suburban New Jersey location where contractors were contacted to visit a home to evaluate a potential problem with its air conditioning system. When they misdiagnosed the situation or misled the customer, the Today Show team confronted them about their methods and tactics.

Robert C. (Bobby) Ring provided commentary as an air conditioning industry expert during the segment. President of Meyer & Depew Co., a contracting business in Kenilworth, New Jersey, Mr. Ring also serves as Senior Vice Chairman of the national Board of Directors of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), the nation’s largest non-profit trade association serving the indoor environment industry.

“I was glad to have the opportunity to be part of the Today Show report and help inform consumers about what to look for when selecting a quality contractor,” said Ring. “The report serves as an educational reminder to homeowners about all the things they should do when selecting a company to repair or install a home air conditioning system.”

Important steps in finding a qualified contractor include:

-          Referrals from satisfied neighbors, friends and relatives.
-          Confirming that your contractor is properly licensed according to the requirements of your state or municipality.
-          Making certain that your contractor employs service and installation technicians that are NATE-certified. NATE is recognized as the HVAC industry’s national program for certification.
-          Verifying that the contractor offers a service agreement program or regular maintenance plans.

While a number of questionable suggestions were made by service technicians during the report, Ring states that realizing the distinction between a service recommendation and a required repair is very important for homeowners to understand when evaluating their choices. Equally important, he believes, is that air conditioning contractors must also conduct business to the highest possible ethical and professional standards under all circumstances.

“I felt it important to see that the report was conducted in a professional and balanced manner and that our industry was represented fairly and honestly.” Ring continues, “HVAC contractors should always have the homeowner’s concerns and best interests as their top priorities.”
