The Chicago Tribune reports that a wildfire has forced nearly 3,000 residents to evacuate their homes across Northern California. The fire ignited around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday along the border of Shasta county and Tehema county. Although officials have yet to determine the cause, reports state that the fire began following a series of lightning strikes.

To date, no illnesses or deaths have been reported as a result of the fire. Seven homes have been destroyed but over 3,000 more homes are threatened as the fire continues to expand.

Reports state that 1,000 firefighters, 20 water tenders, and 3 helicopters are working to contain the fire. As of Sunday evening, no part of the fire has been contained.

Smoke from fire creates unhealthy air that is especially threatening to young children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory illnesses.

“This summer there has been an increased amount of wildfires, and our testing lab has analyzed many smoke/fire debris samples to determine the extent of the property damage and whether wildfires are truly the source,” states EMSL’s Materials Testing Laboratory Manager, Eugenia Mirica, Ph. D. “EMSL Analytical is the nation’s leading provider of smoke damage testing services and offers fire debris analysis to help settle insurance claims for property damage caused by a wildfire.”
