“If the IBC Varna wants to keep up with the International ballet scene, IBC Varna should connect with the rest of the ballet community,” said Benjamin Feliksdal, CID Member and ballet critic. “It’s up to the organizers and policy makers in which direction the competition has to go. It is the responsibility of the Oldest Ballet Competition in the world to keep connected with the fast changing ballet world. To be the first means also to lead in leadership and show the ballet community and the existing competitions new directions.”

Free Dance
The modern choreographies entered in a new area of “free dance”. Feliksdal stated:  “We saw in this competition (from the second round) a lot of new names of choreographers but as Jorge Donn (The famous Béjart’s soloist) one’s said: ‘There are a lot of so called choreographers, but there are a few real creators.‘ During the second and third round the participants performed every night a new category of contemporary dancing, but all these pieces are temporarily, they will not leave a line in the historical road of the dance culture, because they are not a style or a new technique, they will stay forever in the shadow of the great art of the contemporary creators and innovators.”

Oldest Ballet Competition
“It’s an obligation of the oldest ballet competition in the world to continue the old traditions with the idea to create new ones! In this case IBC Varna should provide to the participants modern and contemporary choreographies from the international known names,” Feliksdal stated. “These choreographers, should be informed and asked to donate fragments from 2 or 3 of their masterpieces to be shown on the stage of IBC Varna. This will be the new challenge for the participants and the IBC Varna.”

For the 26th International Ballet Competition 2014, the participants expect for the 50th birthday of IBC Varna a new eruption of the volcano, of ideas and creativity.
