Lormel, President and CEO of DML Associates LLC, will be speaking at the First Annual ACAMS New York Forum: A Dialogue with the AML Community on September 12, 2012 in New York. Mr. Lormel is a recognized subject matter expert in the anti-money laundering, terrorist finance, and fraud communities. During his distinguished career with the FBI he helped to establish an investigative organization for terrorist finance to identify funding streams supporting potential terrorists and terrorist attacks.

Recently on May 5, 2012 Dennis M. Lormel testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security, Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, on the subject of “Terrorist Financing Since 9/11: Assessing an Evolving al Qaeda and State Sponsors of Terrorism.” Following that appearance he was questioned further on the subject by Congressman Patrick Meehan, who posed a series of delving inquiries about the current state of terrorist finance. Referring to US government law enforcement operations targeting transnational criminal networks, Congressman Meehan asked: “How does counterterrorism fit in this increasingly interconnected underworld?”

“The nexus between criminal and terrorist organizations has continued to grow. This trend will persist. As the US government and our allies’ continue to exert pressure and cut off funding streams, terrorists will further align themselves with criminal organizations and participate in criminal activity to raise much needed money. Terrorists are extremely adaptable and consistently look for new funding mechanisms. Many terrorist organizations have become engaged in drug trafficking because drug trafficking is the most profitable criminal activity. These terrorist groups are evolving into hybrid criminal and terrorist organizations. As they do, their ideology tends to give way to greed. Greed is vulnerability law enforcement can exploit, unlike ideology. This makes these groups more susceptible to criminal investigation and prosecution.” – Dennis M. Lormel
