The Huffington Post reports that the Fairfield Creek fire, a wildfire burning in north-central Nebraska, has expanded to nearly 92 square miles after Monday’s hot and windy weather. Additionally, two smaller fires about 20 miles east have burned a region of more than 6 miles.

With over 200 firefighters battling the blaze, officials estimate the fires are about 15 percent contained. Three firefighters have reportedly been injured, and 10 homes have been destroyed.

Firefighters are facing difficulties controlling the fire because the area is comprised of densely wooded ravines. Furthermore, when wind picks up and temperatures increase, the fire spreads quickly through those ravines.

The National Weather Service reports that temperatures in surrounding areas of the fire are predicted to reach 107 degrees and winds are predicted to continue at 25 mph, leaving local residents are risk of evacuation.

“This summer has been terrible for wildfires, and our testing lab has analyzed an increased number of smoke/fire debris samples to determine the extent of the property damage and whether wildfires are truly the source,” states EMSL’s Materials Testing Laboratory Manager, Eugenia Mirica, Ph. D. “In this capacity, EMSL Analytical helps insurance companies and homeowners settle insurance claims caused by destructive wildfires.”
