IAQ Professionals Protect Families and Workers from Microbial Toxins

People who live and work in indoor environments with elevated levels of mold often recognize that they may experience allergic symptoms.  People who suffer from asthma may also experience asthmatic attacks as mold is a known asthma trigger.
 
What few people recognize is that many types of fungi also produce toxins.  These microbial toxins, known as mycotoxins, have been shown to cause a host of human health effects.  They include: mucous membrane irritation, skin rash, nausea, immune system suppression, acute or chronic liver damage, acute or chronic central nervous system damage, endocrine effects, and even cancer.
 
Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by some types of fungi.  Some molds can produce several mycotoxins, and other molds produce mycotoxins only under certain environmental conditions.   To date, more than 200 mycotoxins have been identified from common molds.
 
“Some of the molds that are known to produce mycotoxins are commonly found in moisture-damaged buildings. Exposure pathways for mycotoxins can include inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact,” reports the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
