Delta Wins Henshaw Award for Corporate Leadership in Safety


Award complements Delta’s efforts to recognize June as National Safety Month

ATLANTA, June 27, 2006 – Delta Air Lines received the Henshaw Award for Corporate Leadership in Safety from SafetyXChange, an online community where safety professionals can go for new ideas, workable solutions and fresh perspectives. The inaugural “Saxcies” awards were given out in five categories and are designed to honor SafetyXChange members, both individuals and companies, for outstanding achievement and dedication to safety and health.

The Henshaw Award is given to a company that integrates health and safety into its essential business mission and objectives, uses safety to measure business value and success and demonstrates a leadership style that fosters vision, commitment, transparency, and employee engagement that results in sustainable health and safety performance. It is named after former Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) administrator, John Henshaw.

For the month of June, Delta is showing its support for National Safety Month, sponsored by the National Safety Council, by reminding customers and employees to buckle up, use personal protective equipment and review emergency preparedness plans. Delta’s continued workplace safety efforts have resulted in workplace injury rates that are among the lowest of U.S. airlines, as well as an additional OSHA safety certification and environmental efforts recognized by the State of Georgia.

In May, Delta also was honored by OSHA with Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star certification at its St. Louis airport customer service facility. VPP status is awarded to companies that implement and maintain workplace health and safety programs that go above and beyond federal regulations and industry standards. Since 2000, Delta has received VPP Star status at six sites, including its maintenance facility in Atlanta and its airport customer service facility in Kansas City, Mo. Nationwide, only one in approximately 5,000 worksites have received VPP status – Delta and Delta Connection carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines are the only commercial airlines to attain VPP status.
