San Diego, California – San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine has great respect for those who have been willing to risk their lives for our country and believes in thanking our veterans every day. Expressing our appreciation for our veterans, however, is especially important during national holidays, such as the recent Memorial Day holiday.

In honor of Memorial Day, San Diego Hospice staff and volunteers, including members of the Veterans Outreach Committee and Vet-to-Vet Volunteers, honored veterans by visiting participating long-term care facilities in San Diego County. As part of San Diego Hospice’s Veterans Outreach program, staff and volunteers conducted a special pinning ceremony for veterans at the facilities, which included a patriotic reception with apple pie and ice cream, served to facility residents. Over 500 guests attended the festivities, with 300 veterans on San Diego Hospice care receiving commemorative lapel pins.

“It was our honor to spend time with our beloved veterans, and families, and thank them for their service to our country,” said Kathleen Pacurar, President & CEO of San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine. “We also appreciate the dedication and commitment of the volunteers and staff who helped make this event a success, as well as our partnership with local long-term care facilities

This Memorial Day holiday celebration was organized by San Diego Hospice’s VETERANS MATTER program, which was launched in November 2011 and works in conjunction with the national We Honor Veterans movement that is sponsored by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and Veterans Affairs.
