Mold Testing in Homes Utilizing Advanced DNA Testing Techniques

EMSL Analytical provides the EPA’s ERMI testing methodology to help protect families from the hazards of exposure to elevated levels of fungi.

Exposure to elevated levels of mold can trigger asthma episodes in sensitive individuals, allergic reactions and even cause fungal infections in people with compromised immune systems. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that people with asthma should avoid contact with or exposure to molds.  The agency states, “Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory complaints.”

The amount and type of mold people are exposed to can result in different outcomes depending on the individual’s sensitivity, allergies and the health of their immune system.  Molds are naturally all around us, but should not be found in elevated levels in indoor environments.

To help address homes with elevated levels of mold, the EPA developed the Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI).  EMSL Analytical, a leading mold testing laboratory, was one of the first commercial laboratories to offer this service to the public.

According to Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, “EMSL is proud to be one of the first laboratories to offer this mold test kit developed by the EPA. ERMI test kits are the most complete screening method available today utilizing a science and technology backed by a prestigious government agency. The test is easy for a homeowner to use as all they have to do is collect a dust sample in a cartridge that attaches to a vacuum cleaner. The dust is then analyzed by EMSL’s laboratory utilizing advanced DNA testing methods.  Results are then compared to the EPA’s national database of homes.  Unlike many laboratory results, the data is easy to understand because it ranks the mold levels found to those already ranked by the EPA.”

EMSL has developed an online video that explains how to sample utilizing the ERMI test kit.  It can be seen at:
