Counterfeit Version of the Drug Adderall Being Sold Online, Warns FDA

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is cautioning consumers and physicians against purchasing counterfeit versions of Adderall, the pharmaceutical used to treat attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. The LA Times reports that counterfeiters are selling fake versions online and taking advantage of the drug’s currently limited supply caused by manufacturing problems.
 
Adderall is increasingly being used by people without the aforementioned disorders to improve focus and concentration, and therefore consumers without a prescription may be more likely to buy the drug online. 
 
The medicine’s primary ingredients are dextroamphetamine saccharate, amphetamine aspartate, dextroamphetamine sulfate, and amphetamine sulfate; however, the 30-milligram fake pills analyzed by the FDA contain the painkiller tramadol and acetaminophen, according to the LA Times.
 
Counterfeit pharmaceuticals have become a serious problem for the United States, as most ingredients are now produced overseas and the Internet allows people to circumvent the more regulated, traditional supply chains.
