Will a Skin Care Product containing a patient’s own stem cell growth factor speed up healing?

Bellevue, WA – Dr. Fredric A. Stern, medical director at the Stern Center for Aesthetic Surgery in Bellevue, Washington is one of two cosmetic surgeons in the United States, participating in a clinical research trial investigating whether a skin care product derived from a person’s own stem cell growth factor, derived from that patient’s adipose (fat tissue) will perform better than a product that does not contain that growth factor at regenerating collagen, eliminating wrinkles and repairing skin damage.
 
Dr. Stern and the study will be profiled at 10 pm, Friday April 27, 2012 on KONG TV Seattle, and again at 11 pm on KING 5 TV Seattle, during a Health Link segment with news anchor Jean Enerson.  This news segment with Dr. Stern will also be available for streaming at http://www.king5.com under the “Health Link” tab.
 
According to Dr. Stern, “research has shown that stem cell growth factor does exhibit a very strong regenerative ability.  Skin-care products containing stem cell growth factor have been shown to increase collagen formation and repair skin damage, such as the reversal of wrinkles, and in overall skin regeneration.  This study is different; in that we’re studying the effects of a skin care product derived from a person’s own stem cell growth factor.  That’s what makes this study unique.”
 
For this “split face” study, Dr. Stern will remove about 50cc of adipose tissue (approximately 4 -5 TBS of fat) from each of the trial subjects, through a minor liposuction type procedure. 
 
Those cells, shipped overnight to American CryoStem in New Jersey, will be purified, and grown, and each individual patient’s stem cell growth factor will be isolated. 
 
Those stem cells along with the growth factor is then sent to Personal Cell Sciences in Arizona, who will create the trial skin care product from each individual’s personal stem cell growth factor.
 
Once the individualized skin care products are returned to The Stern Center, Dr. Stern and his staff will instruct the test subjects to apply the skin care product containing their own stem cell growth factor to only one side of the face, while continuing to use their usual skin care product(s)(whatever that may be) on the other side of the face.
 
During the two-month duration of the study, Dr. Stern will be taking serial measurements and photographs of each side of each patient’s face at two-week intervals. 
 
At the end of the two-month study, Dr. Stern and other researchers will study the data and the photographs to see if there is a significant difference between the sides of the face treated with the individualized stem cell growth factor skin care product, and the non growth factor treated side of the face.
 
According to Dr. Stern, this study has research ramifications beyond this study.  At each research subject’s discretion, American CryoStem will also store some of their stems cells cryogenically for medical or regenerative purposes that might be available in the future; such as organ repair, cancer treatment etc.
 

About Dr. Fredric Stern:
 
Dr. Fredric Stern founded the Stern Center for Aesthetic Surgery in 1997.
Following his education at Columbia University Medical School, Dr. Stern earned his Board Certification in Ophthalmology at the University of Washington, and underwent extensive additional training in ophthalmic plastic and laser facial surgery.

In 1987, he joined Virginia Mason Medical Center, heading the Department of Ophthalmology and serving as Director of the Oculoplastic Surgery Division for 10 years. While at Virginia Mason, Dr. Stern performed an extensive number of cosmetic laser procedures.  
Dr. Stern has been performing Botox Cosmetic® treatments since 1994, and is one of the top Botox Cosmetic® injectors in Washington State. Dr. Stern is honored to have been chosen as one of a select group of Instructors of the Botox Cosmetic® National Education Faculty, as well as the Radiesse® Medical Education Faculty.  Dr. Stern is also an instructor for Sciton® Laser.  In 2011, Dr. Stern was voted “Seattle’s Best Plastic Surgeon” by viewers of KING TV’s Evening Magazine.
