British engineers have unveiled a new car seat that uses pioneering technology to protect children in the event of a road traffic accident. The design, which has been named the ‘Carkoon’, is an egg-shaped rear-facing baby seat complete with fire-proof cover and GPS system.

The Carkoon’s main feature is a small airbag that remains inflated in order to provide protection against the force of a crash. Once the air bag is in use it gives the child 20 minutes of air so it is able to stay alive until help arrives.

Jullian Preston-Powers, of Cool Technologies in Brighton, is the inventor behind the design. Speaking of the Carkoon’s enhanced protection; he said ‘We have even bounced a brick off it.’

The new innovation has been welcomed by the media after statistics compiled by The AA showed that around 5,000 children were seriously injured in UK road traffic accidents every year. Its gadgets, which include a device that can automatically call 999, are set to give young children the best chance of survival in an accident.

Despite its initial praise, the Carkoon will need to be fully tested before it goes to market, where it will eventually retail at £499.  This will involve establishing whether the inflated airbag can cause any harm to a child.

However, once the product goes on sale, it is expected to be the safest child’s car seat available. Commenting on what the Carkoon could do for the future of road safety, Simon Thompson of Precision Claims, stated:

“It’s great to see such encouraging progress for the safety of young children on the roads. As specialists in road traffic accident claims, we see a large number of accidents involving children that should have been prevented due to the carelessness of other drivers.”

“The Carkoon has the potential to revolutionise the way we protect our children and will help to reassure parents on the roads. My only concern is that at nearly £500, it may not be accessible to everyone.”
