Father Ned Murphy, SJ, SC Associate, POTS Co-Founder,passed away on April 4, 2012. In gratitude for a life fully lived, donations are being made to POTS, Part of the Solution in the Bronx, NY. Services to be held at Fordham University Chapel.
Father Ned Murphy was a priest of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus, ordained in 1968. Born the youngest to a family with fierce Irish roots with a deep commitment to enriching the lives of others, Fr. Ned was a true friend of the Sisters of Charity and the community he lived in. Ned believed, lived and spoke of showing people what thoughts are and can be. He lived that truth; he was a breathing model of integrity and action.
“Take literally the fact that there is no ’we’ and ’them’, there is only an us... and live that way.” – Father Ned Murphy
With that vision in mind, Father Ned founded Part of the Solution (POTS) over thirty years ago, along with Sister Jane Iannucelli, SC and Timothy Boon. POTS served its first meal on January 6, 1982. Thirty years and 4 million meals later, POTS has become the largest emergency food provider in the Bronx and offers a host of support services to help people stabilize their lives. More than 12,000 low-income people are touched by POTS work each year, including 3,500 children and hundreds of working poor families. In all that we do, POTS remains true to the founders original mission to be a loving community, serving people with dignity and respect.
Father Ned’s passing is a sad time for all of us who knew or were influenced by the man. But ultimately, his spirit and legacy lives on everyday through the work of the POTS’ community.
