Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of swing sets from BCI Burke Co., LLC.  The swing sets were sold from January 2004 through December of 2011.  The recall resulted after multiple reports of incidents where the welded connection of the sleeve joint to the arch support could break or crack causing the top swing beam to collapse.

The CPSC also recently announced the recall of several thousand hammock stands due to fall hazards.  There have been numerous reports of cracked foot brackets and several consumers have fallen when the brackets have failed.  The recall involves hammock stands made from steel pipe and sold in green and black under the Twin Oaks brand.

Product recalls resulting from metallurgical problems and faulty welding are a fairly common occurrence.  When they happen they can result in expensive product recalls and in the event that someone has been injured, potentially costly lawsuits.

EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading metallurgical and product testing laboratory, has the expertise to help test products before they go to market as well as help to identify the root cause of product failures.  The characterization of materials is the single most important step in understanding the processing-structure-property relationship, which often holds the key to successful problem-solving or product development.

“The Materials Science Division of EMSL Analytical was established to help clients develop solutions to challenges in manufacturing, quality assurance, and research and development,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical “Today, EMSL provides materials testing, characterization, and forensic laboratory services for a wide range of commercial, industrial, regulatory, and law enforcement clients.  The laboratory is supported by a broad array of instrumentation that can apply a full spectrum of standard and customized analyses including elemental and chemical, structural, particle, surface, contaminant, mechanical, failure, and bio-effectiveness to any project,” he continued.
