Hundreds of good colleges and universities resent being ignored

The typical college ranking service doesn’t stray from the usual suspect 100 to 400 schools. But there are hundreds of reasonably priced and very good schools that should be considered by potential students. But few know how to find these schools.

Boca Raton, Florida – Former university executives, academics and education consultants have set out to create a treasure trove of information on lesser known colleges and universities. Their goal is to provide potential enrollees with access to schools that offer quality degree programs but don’t require that mom and dad mortgage the house to cover the costs.

“It irks me that the same colleges year after year receive recognition by the so-called ranking services,” said Joseph Schmoke, primary founder of University Research & Review. “If they have to dig too deep it seems they ignore schools. The sad thing is hundreds of good schools with reasonable tuition rates go unnoticed by those seeking degrees. We intend to change that,” he stated with a smile.

Schmoke, a former chief executive of an accredited degree-granting university, was among a large group of college presidents, chancellors, provosts and deans who felt slighted and ignored by organizations that claimed the right to rank schools. Realizing this feeling was widespread, Schmoke initiated conversations with many of his peers about creating an organization to publicize lesser known but academically excellent schools. His idea excited everyone. “I kept waiting for one of these former school presidents, or deans, or provosts or education industry experts to tell me I was nuts, or worse, wasting my time. But no one did. And some of them said they’d be willing to help,” Schmoke related.

With the strong support of his peers, Schmoke formed University Research & Review in late 2011, assembled a stellar team, and launched the time consuming review process in March 2012. “It will take a lot of work to pull together relevant, useful information on hundreds and hundreds of schools,” Schmoke said, “but once we’re well along with the process we’ll unveil our website to the public, hopefully later this year. In the meantime, schools that may be curious about who we are and what we’re doing can check out our informational website at www.urandr.org.”
