DALLAS, TEXAS – Ten-time Grand Slam champion Dr. Anne Smith is partnering with T Bar M Racquet Club to present an innovative program for young athletes. Dr. Smith will begin offering her Mach 4® Mental Training System to players in the tennis club’s Junior Development Program, announced T Bar M owner Glen Agritelley.

“This is both an incredible honor and an exceptional opportunity,” Agritelley says. “To have someone of Anne’s caliber working with our young athletes is an experience that very few clubs can offer. We are very excited to be working with her.”

Smith, who is one of only 20 women in the Open Era of tennis to win 10 or more Grand Slam titles, has won three U.S. Open titles, two Wimbledon titles, four French Open titles and one Australian Open titles. She was ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles in 1980 and 1981, and was ranked No. 12 in singles in 1982. With Stan Smith, she won the U.S. Open’s Champions Invitational Mixed Doubles in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

In addition to her tennis career, Smith has a private psychology practice in Texas, and says this program is the perfect way to integrate tennis and psychology.

“A lot of academies work on techniques, but they don’t work on the mental aspect of the game,” she explains. “When you have two players who are well matched, it comes down to mental toughness. That’s what this program is all about.”

Unlike many sports programs, which are taught in a classroom, Smith will work with players on the court to teach the components of her program. Although her initial work will be with the Junior Development Program, she says it is relevant to any player of any age and skill level. She outlined the program in her 2006 book, “Mach 4® Mental Training System: Tennis Handbook and Workbook II for Coaches, Parents, and Players,” and also is the author of “Grand Slam: Coach Your Mind to Win in Sports, Business and Life.” In 2009, she won the United States Olympic Committee’s “Doc” Counsilman Science Award for her contributions in sports psychology and mental training. She was nominated for the award by the U.S. Tennis Association.

Born and raised in Dallas, Smith says she is eager to launch the program at the very club where she first began playing. “I joined T Bar M when I was 10 and went through their Junior Program,” she says. “I came up through this club, so I have a real connection there. I’m looking forward to working with them; it feels like I’ve come full circle.”
