The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had issued a warning of the possible Actos bladder cancer risk, but did not halt sales in the United States. According to the FDA, Takeda was told to include the possible risk of Actos bladder cancer on its label.

After the Actos bladder cancer hearing was announced, Takeda released a statement saying that it stands behind its product. "Takeda is confident in the therapeutic benefits of Actos and its importance as a treatment for type 2 diabetes.

“As a science and evidence-based company, Takeda firmly stands behind the substantial data available confirming the positive risk/benefit profile of Actos, which includes twelve years of clinical and patient experience with the product,” the statement said.

Symptoms of Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer may spread to other organs of the body such as the bones, liver and lungs. Treatment and prognosis depends on the severity of the bladder cancer when diagnosed. Smoking may also increase the risk of bladder cancer.

Symptoms of bladder cancer include:

  • Bloody urine
  • Frequent urination
  • Pain on urination
  • Back or abdominal pain
  • Weight loss
