Canadian Theatre Troupe Targets Teenage Bullying

WEBWIRE

Schoolyard bullies have been around as long as schools have existed; unfortunately they have more often been tolerated than punished. That the consequences of bullying can sometimes be tragic is brought home in a play to be presented in March in La Mirada under the auspices of Phantom Projects.
In its first appearance in southern California, the acclaimed Canadian troupe, Green Thumb Theatre for Young People, will bring its production of “The Shape of a Girl” to the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts for two performances March 9th at 10 a.m. and 7:30 pm. The one-woman play will be available to schools at the 10 o’clock performance and open to the public at the evening performance.
Written by Joan MacCleod, one of Canada’s most-respected authors, the play is about a teen coming to terms with peer violence, through both her horror at the widely-covered murder of a young girl by a group of her peers and the subsequent realization that she has been part of a bullying clique not all that different from the one she’s been reading about in the newspapers
“The Shape of a Girl” opened at the Alberta (Canada)Theatre Projects 2001 playRites Festival and went on to tour 17 weeks throughout Canada and the US. The following year, a nine-city Canadian tour culminated in a 6-week run in Toronto, which received a rare five stars from the Toronto Star. In 2003 a second nine-city Canada/US tour culminated in a performance at the International Showcase for Performing Arts for Young People in Quebec.
The presentation of the Green Thumb Theatre for Young People marks the local group’s first outing as presenter of another company. Funded in part by a grant from the City of La Mirada, they have been producing and presenting their own educational productions at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and at schools throughout southern California since 2001. Company director Steve Cisneros is enthusiastic about the organization’s expansion into bringing the work of other outstanding educational theatre companies to the local community.
The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts is located at 14900 La Mirada Blvd.in La Mirada. For further information or to purchase tickets, call the Phantom Projects office at 562-902-0119 or go to their website at www.PhantomProjects.com.
