Siemens and Atos join forces in the areas of generation planning and energy trading

Joint sustainable solution will optimize power generation and reduce cost and risk

Nuremberg (Germany)/Paris (France) - Siemens and international IT services provider Atos announce first collaboration in the energy market following their strategic partnership formed in July 2011 to offer joint innovative approaches. The companies jointly invest into developing an integrated solution to optimize power generation and reduce cost and risk. Both partners will contribute their know-how and experience in their respective field. This integrated software solution is designed to significantly boost the profitability of power generation and trading by optimizing the bid creation and by providing a seamless data flow at IT level. This furthermore saves costs for integration and reduces the project risks.

The proportion of renewable energy sources used at the power plant fleets of supply companies and consequently in their electricity trading portfolio is increasing. This creates additional challenges for power supply companies and energy traders alike. To meet these challenges professionally, Siemens and Atos will offer an integrated software solution based on the Siemens generation planning tool jROS (Joint Resource Optimization and Scheduler) and the Atos package PTRS (Power Trading and Retail System) for power trading and risk management.

“The cooperation with Atos puts us in a position to offer our customers an IT solution that covers their entire value chain. At the same time, a single source of supply reduces the project risk significantly when introducing or exchanging tools of this type,” said Jan Mrosik, CEO of the Smart Grid division in Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector.

“Our customers will gain considerable advantages from this expanded collaboration with Siemens in the domain of energy. By offering this solution our customers benefit from the combination of strengths of two experts in the energy sector. We believe we are meeting our customer’s strictest demands and are helping them to expand in this growing market segment”, said Jérôme De Parscau du Plessix, CEO at Atos Worldgrid.

The joint Resource Optimization and Scheduler (jROS) is a component of the Siemens Spectrum Power network control system, the Atos Power Trading and Retail System (PTRS) is a flexible platform for the rapid implementation of different energy market models including interfaces to power exchanges. For power supply companies, the integrated software solution offers the advantage of modular coverage for all aspects of optimizing their power plant and contract portfolio. At the same time, it minimizes integration risk because jROS and PTRS communicate via joint standard interfaces tested in-house, so they do not need to be implemented in a project first. The integration itself offers a seamless data flow between generation planning and energy trading, allowing faster decisions to be made in the bidding process on energy exchanges and for bilateral trading.

Energy-efficient, eco-friendly solutions for setting up intelligent power supply networks (Smart Grids) are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2011, revenue from the portfolio totalled nearly EUR30 billion, making Siemens one of the world’s largest suppliers of eco-friendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by nearly 320 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of Berlin, Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo. Under the umbrella of the Firm of the Future, Atos works in partnership with clients to create more sustainable business operations. Its Ambition Carbon Free approach supports clients in their actions to reduce their footprint and create a more sustainable IT infrastructure. In addition, Atos offsets the carbon emissions of its data-centers in order to propose IT carbon neutral services to its clients.

Both companies showcase their solutions at E-World that takes place in Essen from 7 – 9 February 2012.

The Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector (Munich, Germany), with approximately 87,000 employees, offers sustainable technologies for metropolitan areas and their infrastructures. Its offerings include integrated mobility solutions, building and security technology, power distribution, smart grid applications, and low- and medium-voltage products. The Sector comprises the Divisions Rail Systems, Mobility and Logistics, Low and Medium Voltage, Smart Grid, Building Technologies, and Osram AG.

The Siemens Smart Grid Division (Nuremberg, Germany) supplies power providers and network operators, industrial enterprises, infrastructure elements and cities with products and solutions for intelligent and flexible network infrastructures. To meet growing energy needs, the networks of today and tomorrow must integrate more and more renewable energy sources and ensure bi-directional energy and communication flows. Smart Grids help make it possible to generate and use power efficiently and on demand.
