UK Businesses to Invest in Procurement Jobs

A new poll has revealed UK firms will invest in the procurement job sector during 2012 as they seek to drive for greater efficiency enabling them to achieve cost cutting targets.

The Science Warehouse and eWorld study released the Procurement Pulse Survey 2012 which was based on the responses of 313 business professionals. It found 85% of business professionals surveyed expect to increase investment in their procurement operations in an attempt to increase savings.

The new report also revealed 84% of businesses said they believed cost-cutting is the number one priority for their procurement team. The most sought-after area of savings were professional services and computer spend, with 37% identifying them as the highest priority spend categories.

Core Talent commented on the latest findings suggesting that “firms are recognising the worthwhile investment in their procurement capability, which will be a valuable requirement if they are to deliver long-term savings.

“It’s refreshing to find so many businesses investing in staff that supports their procurement function and while other factors such as the quality of supply and financial stability are always important value drivers in procurement, cost cutting has become a top initiative this year”

A key priority for 2012 is developing greater control and visibility of spends, with more than half of UK businesses identifying it as highly important. However the survey found just a third of companies had generated a saving of over £1 million in 2011.

Cost cutting schemes also emerged as top priority in a recent Supply Management Readers Survey 2011. Those who took part, which included entries from over 3000 UK businesses, suggested reduced spending was a priority. Other initiatives included influencing more spend areas, raising the profile of purchasing and supply, sustainable procurement and in investing in procurement resources.
