YMCA of Greater Houston Sued for $1 Million-Dollars

Barry & Loewy LLP Files Suit On Behalf of Minor Girl Who Was Sexually Molested by YMCA of Greater Houston Employee

AUSTIN, TX, (June 12, 2006) – Barry & Loewy LLP today announced it has filed a $1 million-dollar civil suit against the YMCA of Greater Houston on behalf of a minor girl who was molested by a YMCA employee in 2004.

The minor girl, then a nine-year old, was enrolled in a YMCA of Greater Houston after-school program in Kingwood, TX. The YMCA of Greater Houston employed an adult male to work as a counselor in the program. On numerous occasions, while employed by the YMCA, the adult male counselor inappropriately touched young children in the program.

Instead of immediately firing the counselor, the YMCA of Greater Houston continued to employ him. The YMCA counselor subsequently molested the minor girl and was criminally prosecuted for Indecency with a Minor, a second-degree felony.

“It is an atrocity that the YMCA of Greater Houston knew that one of its employees was inappropriately touching young children but did nothing about it,” stated Barry & Loewy founding partner Carl R. Barry. “By failing to act quickly and fire the counselor, the YMCA of Greater Houston continued to allow this adult male unfettered access to young children and, tragically, sexually molest a nine-year old girl.”

As a result of the sexual molestation, the minor girl has suffered extreme mental and psychologically trauma. Barry & Loewy LLP is seeking no less than $1 million dollars against the YMCA of Greater Houston for their negligently hiring, supervising and retention of the adult male counselor. The case is pending in the Harris County 125th District Court.
