The Snugg Predicts Future Features of the Amazon Kindle Fire 2

Releasing a new addition so soon would indicate that it is supposed to complement the existing Kindle Fire as opposed to posing as an outright upgrade. A new model with a larger screen isn’t so far fetched.

The Kindle Fire has done a great job of disrupting the tablet industry, with its highly accessible price tag of $200 the affordable 7 inch tablet has been dubbed the iPad killer and has caused a flurry of other tablet manufacturers to clamour for their own slice of the ‘affordable’ tablet market. Not only this, but recently there has been speculation that the Kindle Fire was more profitable than expected, no doubt in part to the sale for their own Kindle Fire Case for the device and media downloads.

Just months after its release however, rumours are already circulating about a possible addition to the Kindle Fire range. Precisely what new features it will boast are unclear, but speculation is rife.

The Snugg’s Managing Director, Mr Richard Mercer stated:

“It’s a difficult one. The Kindle Fire has been incredibly popular, but Amazon has had a lot of trouble trying to replicate that success elsewhere, here in the UK the only way to get one is to order a device from the US and register it with an American credit card. Unless you have family state-side, this can be difficult. Until they successfully negotiate the rights to media distribution outside of the US, they’ll be limited. Releasing a new addition so soon would indicate that it is supposed to complement the existing Kindle Fire as opposed to posing as an outright upgrade. Given that media consumption is the key driver behind a Kindle Purchase, a new model with larger screen isn’t so far-fetched”

In addition to the larger screen, rumours have also pointed to an upgraded user interface, increased internal storage and the possibility of expandable microSD slots.

The problem with these features is cost. To include these in a new Kindle Fire, would increase the selling price and the reason the existing Kindle Fire has been so successful has been because of its low price point. A larger screen and increased performance may push it into the higher end territory where Amazon would then need to compete with the likes of the Playbook, iPad, Xoom and many more.

“Much of this is speculation at present, but the new Nook Tablet actually outperforms the Kindle Fire in terms of storage capacity for only an additional $49, so a few tweaks aren’t out of the question. What is interesting is that there have been reports that Foxconn, the company who assembles the iPad and the Sony Tablet S, will be the ones to manufacture the new Kindle Fire, where currently the Kindle Fire is being produced by Quanta Computer. Foxconn have dragged Apple into the headlines with less than sterling stories on employee welfare. Such a move could be construed as a cost saving exercise which could make up for the cost of improved components” says Mr Mercer.

Other rumours mention the possibility of 3G functionality and an improved processor to improve response times, whilst Digitimes reports that Taiwan-based makers have indicated that new Kindle shipments will begin in the first half of 2012.

“As with any new tablet device, as soon as we get our hands on the specifications for them, our designers will create a new case ready for manufacture. A new screen size will mean that an overhaul will be required, whereas subtle changes might have little effect, save for adding new holes for repositioned sockets for example. Either way, we want to make sure that a new Snugg Kindle Fire Case is available for any of our customers looking to upgrade this year” adds Mr Mercer
