The Snugg Examines Implications of the 2012 Tablet Surge For Case Manufacturers

What has only recently come to light however is that the iPad 3 may have been at the show. iLounge last year reported that they saw a mock-up of the iPad 2 at CES 2011 which was later proved to be true.

The Consumer Electronics Show has a habit of setting the bar for public technology expectations for the rest of the year and CES 2012 was no exception. A whole host of consumer gadgetry was unveiled including a washing machine you can control via an app, some new 55 Inch OLED TVs that are less than a third of an inch think and a whole host of new tablets.

Managing Director of the The Snugg, Mr Richard Mercer, flew out to Las Vegas to see the event:

“The sheer volume of new tablets on show at CES 2012 made it hard for any to truly stand out from the crowd, despite the fact that many tablets on show at CES 2012 were little more than upgrades of existing models. Tablets sporting smaller screen sizes at lower prices were more evident, no doubt spurred on by the success of the Kindle Fire. It does however show that the growth of the tablet industry won’t be slowing down any time soon. Recent research suggests that two thirds of business owners plan to buy a tablet this year so the outlook is good”.

A number of the tablets on show did try to differentiate themselves from the rest; like the Lenovo IdeaTabS2-10, which gives users the option of purchasing an optional keyboard dock for $200 which includes an additional battery, to double battery life; although this follows in the footsteps of the Asus Transformer which utilises a similar, optional keyboard. Fujitsu on the other hand, decided to build its latest tablets to sustain full submersion in water for up to 30 minutes, although this technology will not reach the US until it has proven successful in Japan. Dell has also announced plans to enter the tablet market, having recently announced the release of their smaller form-factor Alienware gaming desktops.

Razer on the other hand demonstrated a gaming tablet prototype, built solely for the PC gaming enthusiast for gaming on the go, although their last laptop offering from CES 2011 has still to reach store shelves.

What has only recently come to light however is that the iPad 3 may have been at the show. iLounge last year reported that they saw a mock-up of the iPad 2 at CES 2011 which was later proved to be true.

“If the mock-up case seen at CES 2012 is anything to go by, it could be that we’ll need to design some new covers. We were quite lucky with the iPhone 4S as the dimensions were the same, but a change of just 1mm means that our Snugg iPad 2 cases simply won’t be large enough to accommodate them. Other case manufacturers have a little extra room in their cases so they may get off lightly. At The Snugg however, we believe a Snugg fitting case is critical and so we will make all the modifications necessary to keep our customers happy” Says Mr Mercer.

Apple regularly dismisses the idea of appearing at these events, instead opting to stage their own press events to announce new releases and developments. Although it is not the first time that an Apple product has been leaked, or has ‘mysteriously’ appeared somewhere prior to an ensuing media frenzy.

“Of course, as the report on this case has yet to be clarified by Apple themselves, we may find that the new iPad may be of the same form factor, or it could be radically different. Either way, we’ll be sure to prepare for its release so that our current iPad 2 Case users will get all the benefits of a Snugg case should they decide to upgrade” states Mr Mercer
