New York, NY--Ticonderoga Ventures, Inc. announces that The Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania will present a new research study on how social media is used in local governments.

The study looks at leading edge strategies and techniques employed by government agencies to not only communicate but also to engage citizens in solving local problems.  The presentation is part of the Social Media Conference taking place on January 23-25, 2011 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, Florida.

The Fels Research & Consulting team conducted a unique survey of U.S. cities to determine what social media and what tactics contribute to better government. The new work builds on the 2009 Fels report, “Making the Most of Social Media,” a handbook to help government agencies get started in social media.  Now Fels has compiled an in-depth report on the use of Social Media in local governments to engage citizens and better deliver services. The report is based on a survey of over 100 cities and includes in-depth interviews with local government administrators and communication directors from across the nation. The findings reveal what social media technologies local governments are increasingly relying upon to disseminate information to their community, how social media is being managed, monitored, and measured by city government staff, and the creative ways local governments are engaging citizens through various social media platforms. Each section contains promising practices to produce the most effective and high-quality results, as well as real-life examples to illustrate how and why certain city governments use particular social media platforms.

Founded in 1937, the Fels Institute of Government is the University of Pennsylvania’s graduate program in public policy and public management. Originally established for the purpose of training local government officials, over time Fels broadened its mission; it now prepares its students for public leadership positions in city, state, and federal agencies, elective politics, nonprofit organizations, and private firms with close connections to the public sector. Fels Research & Consulting marries the rich assets of Penn and the Fels Institute of Government with the expertise of seasoned professionals and the creativity of high caliber graduate students to tackle innovative projects related to public policy and public management. Our aim is to work with governments, public institutions, civic groups, and nonprofits to enhance their effectiveness and impact. The work of Fels Research and Consulting is built on a foundation of Promising Practices – innovations, experiments, programs, or processes that seem to lead to effective and productive results in a given situation. Several times a year the team focuses on breaking developments in areas of interest to public sector leaders and managers, and embarks on a series of initiatives to understand, communicate and disseminate “promising practices” in particular areas of public leadership.
