ClearLaw Solicitors Response to Recent Defeat in Commons of Hairdresser Registration Call

ClearLaw Solicitors have given their reaction to the recent defeat of the hairdresser registration call after it was brought up by Conservative MP David Morris.

Mr Morris, who was once a salon owner in Wigan and Bolton before becoming an MP, put forward the bill to force hairdressers to register by law with a professional body. He argued that unqualified and uneducated hairdressers applying dangerous chemicals without proper training could lead to serious injury or even death.

The bill to create a register had the backing of the industries official body, the British Hairdressing Council (BHC), but was still narrowly blocked by as little as four votes. Morris stated “It is very rare for a Bill such as this to go to the Division Bell and be voted on, which is confirmation of the importance this subject was given by the House of Commons”.

There are currently an estimated 250,000 hair dressers within the UK, however only 6,000 are registered with the BHC.  Morris already has plans to return to the House of Commons with another Ten Minute Bill and will pursue lobbying Government until then.
