This Holiday Season, Smart Holiday Shopping with a Conscience Can Make Every Dollar Count in an Ailing Economy, Suggests Roots and Wings International

Spokane, WA, November 8, 2011 – In a weakened and uncertain economy, holiday shopping can be especially stressful and challenging. The task of finding great holiday gifts on a budget may seem daunting, but there are ways to honor the season of giving and even make a difference on a tight budget. Roots & Wings International (RWI), a non-profit focused on promoting economic development in rural Guatemala by providing educational opportunities and access to technology, offers busy shoppers the opportunity to find gifts for everyone from the bookworm to the social butterfly on their shopping list while making a unique difference.

At RWI’s website, shoppers can gift delicious, fair trade organic coffee and popular items ranging from e-books to cosmetics from amazon.com. The proceeds will go towards helping the youth of rural Guatemala receive an education and become a catalyst for change in their impoverished, indigenous communities. So far, RWI has helped nearly 30 children whose families live on less than $2 a day become university students. The non-profit has also built a tech center in one of the poorest areas of rural Guatemala, giving several thousand villagers access to the outside world for the first time and serving 600 primary and secondary Mayan students through tutoring and computer literacy programs.

In addition, shoppers have the option of naming a scholarship or donating directly. The organization has several donation options including contributing monthly, making a one-time donation, corporate gift matching, volunteering with skills and time and starting a fundraiser.
